Kurtis grew up in Norfolk, Virginia with his brother Jason before moving with the family to Rockingham County in 1996. While in school he worked in several local restaurants, including Bob-a-Rea’s Pizza and Ruby Tuesday before finding his passion for sales, management, and living out his entrepreneurial dreams in the wireless industry and craft beer business.
Kurtis has always focused on providing the best customer sales experience while striving to build and manage teams of professionals. In 2010, he earned the opportunity to expand the operating territory for Cellular Sales Verizon Wireless into Maryland, as a Regional Director, where he and his wife Wendy moved to start the new business. Kurtis and Wendy work closely together to help continue the company’s success in Maryland with 22 locations and over 160 employees. Kurtis also fell in love with craft beer and he and Jason began dreaming of how to build a company that connects people to the values of family, fun and freedom. Skipping Rock Beer was born out of those conversations. Along with Jason, Kurtis assists with Skipping Rock’s strategic business growth and overall company management.
Kurtis currently lives in the Annapolis area where he, Wendy, and their two children, Blake and Mila, enjoy family time and their community of friends and colleagues. He frequently travels to Virginia to enjoy the robust craft beer scene and to work on growing Skipping Rock Beer.
Jason moved to the Shenandoah Valley more than 20 years ago from Norfolk VA to attend James Madison University. He instantly fell in love with the area and with his now wife, Lesley Jordan, whose family have been residents of the Valley for generations.
Jason has worked in the fields of land development, church administration, and law enforcement. He proudly served the City of Waynesboro as a police officer for 17 years. Rising through the ranks, he left the department as a Sergeant in 2013 and remained on as a part-time police officer until December 2015 when he launched a custom wood crafting business.
Jason and Lesley have four children who attend public schools in the Turner Ashby District. Lesley is a nurse at Sentara RMH. They’re living out Skipping Rock Beer Company’s values of family, fun, and freedom on their farm in Bridgewater, Virginia.
Ben was born and raised in Keene, NH. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps as an infantryman. He served in Alpha Company, 1st Battalion 25th Marines and was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq in 2006. At the conclusion of his service, Ben left the Marines as a Corporal.
After returning home, Ben was unsure of what the future would hold. He was a fan of Elm City Brewing Co. and decided to apply to join their team. He worked his way up from dish washer to cook to then to the position of Assistant Brewer which he held for 4.5 years. During this time Ben attended the Siebel Institute and completed their Brewing Science and Technology Associate program. Shortly after, he was offered Elm City’s Head Brewer position in 2012. During his 6 years in the role, his beers received many awards including a top 10 finish in the 2016 US Open Beer Championship, a 2016 GABF Gold Medal, and the 2018 World Beer Cup Gold Medal for his Belgian Dubbel.
Attracted to Skipping Rock Beer Company’s values of family, fun, and freedom, Ben moved his family to Augusta County and joined the Skipping Rock team as Head Brewer in April 2018.
Claire Casto grew up in the DC area, and from there traveled the country before inadvertently finding a place to call home in Staunton, VA in 2013.
Claire’s beer journey began on 6th Street in Austin, TX where she worked and began her beer education and sensory training at renowned beer garden, Easy Tiger. When she moved to Virginia, she began working for Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Lexington where she remained for almost five years. During her adventures there, Claire learned numerous skills and became deeply involved in as many events, mash-ins, and projects as she could. Her passion for the industry and giving guests a memorable experience drove her ambition to do more, and thus was wooed away to work for Skipping Rock Beer Company – happily, right in her own backyard. She looks forward to delving into her home community, spreading her creative spirit, and being able to bike to work.
In her “spare” time, Claire loves reading, self-study, home improvement, baking, and enjoying the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley with her husband (who she met on her first ever visit to Devils Backbone) and three useless but adorable cats.
Outside Sales Representative
Born and raised in Wallingford, CT, Andrew and his family moved to Cookeville, TN in 1995 where he graduated from Upperman High School in 2002. He relocated to The Shenandoah Valley in September 2015 to be closer to his sister, Aubrey, and is excited to be putting down roots.
Andrew’s restaurant/bar industry experience began at age 16 when he started as a busser for Chili’s. There, he worked his way up to the role of Corporate Trainer where he helped to train the teams of 22 new stores. His sales background includes 5 years selling Verizon Wireless service for Cellular Sales in East Tennessee. Most recently he was a bartender for the Cracked Pillar Pub in Bridgewater, VA where he found his passion for craft beer.
Andrew has a passion for sports, especially baseball. And even though he’s a diehard Yankee fan, we don’t hold that against him.
